When a patient presents with hearing loss, audiometry is a crucial tool for determining their hearing thresholds. A patient's degree and type of hearing loss (sensorineural, conductive, or mixed) are quantified and visually displayed on an audiogram. Additionally, different hearing loss etiologies may show distinctive patterns on the audiogram, making this testing modality essential for diagnostic purposes. The best way to objectively diagnose hearing loss is through an audiogram, which measures the air conduction or bone conduction of sound via the auditory system. Measured by air conduction, sound travels from the outer ear, via the middle ear, and into the inner ear, from which it is sent to the brain for auditory processing. Bone conduction, in contrast, solely evaluates transmission from the inner ear to the central nervous system.
